In 1856, Mary Ellen Dews was born.
Mary Dews was sent to Europe to study in
Her family, in 1885, left Scotland and went to Dunedin, New Zealand.
In New Zealand Mary taught at a small private school in Auckland.
She taught there until she was approched to start up a school by herself.
Remember girls, it is very important for you all to get educations.
In 1895 Mary and her two sisters, Kate and Alice, opened up the school with only 6 students. Mary strongly believed in girls getting an education.
The amount of students quickly grew and became the biggest all girls private school with 210 students. Kate encouraged many of the girls to partake in sports.
In 1914 Mary and Kate sold the school and moved to Huapai to breed cattle. She died in Auckland in 1945.
