  • In 1856, Mary Ellen Dews was born.
  • Mary Dews was sent to Europe to study in
  • Her family, in 1885, left Scotland and went to Dunedin, New Zealand.
  • In New Zealand Mary taught at a small private school in Auckland.
  • She taught there until she was approched to start up a school by herself. 
  • Remember girls, it is very important for you all to get educations.
  • In 1895 Mary and her two sisters, Kate and Alice, opened up the school with only 6 students. Mary strongly believed in girls getting an education.
  • The amount of students quickly grew and became the biggest all girls private school with 210 students. Kate encouraged many of the girls to partake in sports.
  • In 1914 Mary and Kate sold the school and moved to Huapai to breed cattle. She died in Auckland in 1945.
