Daisy feels torn between her true loving feelings with Gatsby and her marriage with Tom. ALthough she loves Gatsby, if she leaves him she will ruin her status and all her wealth will be gone.
Tom hits Myrtle when she antagonizes him by retreating Daisy's name. This shows Tom and Myrtle's true personality, shameless and inmoral.
Gatsby is criticized by society because he is not an old money family and had to work for his money. This is shown when Tom and the Sloanes leave him out of lunch.
