Once upon a time, there was a man called Orpheus, he had a voice like an angel and could play the lute beautifully. People flocked from all over the world to hear him play.
One of the people that came to see him was a wood nymph called Eurydice. It was love at first sight.
This happiness was not to last. While running from Aristaeus a man who wanted to kill Orpheus, Eurydice was bitten by a nest of deadly vipers and was fatally wounded.
Orpheus loved Eurydice so much that he convinced Hades with his heart-breaking singing to let him into the Underworld to get her back. Hades said that Eurydice would follow him out of the Underworld but if he turned back she would be returned to the Underworld.
Orpheus reached the exit of the Underworld without looking back and when he at last reached the sun he turned back to rejoice. However, Eurydice had not reached the light yet and was sucked back into the Underworld.
Orpheus let himself be killed by a group of jealous girls so that he could be returned to his love Eurydice.
