  • 95 THESES
  • On the 2nd of July 1501, Luther was coming home after visiting his parents who live in Mansfeld, when he was caught in an horrific storm. He was almost back at the University of Erfut where he was studying law, when a lightening bolt struck the ground next to him, this is when he cried out to St Anne the Patron Saint of miners to save him saying this Martin vowed to become a monk. Then the storm subsided and he was saved.
  • You have now been excommunicated, you must leave
  • Martin was unhappy with the Churches sale of indulgences as he believed that faith should be earned not brought meaning that entry into heaven should not be brought. This is what started Martin's feud with the Catholic church. He did not believe that innocent people should be spending their lives saving for an indulgence and the rich could just buy them easily.
  • Bible
  • So it was no surprise that Luther put his list of complaints on the door of the Wittenberg Castle on the 31st of October 1517, this publication of the 95 Theses is what began a rivalry between Martin Luther and the Catholic Church. He posted his complaints because he did not believe in the sale of indulgences, he was questioning the Popes control over the people.
  • come my friends
  • Martin Luther refused to withdraw and take down the Theses so on January the 3rd 1521, Pope Leo excommunicated Martin from the Catholic Church and the community, Martin left and stayed in the Wartburg Castle for some time and then he reentered the community some years later but not the Catholic Church.
  • In 1534 Martin used the printing press to translate the bible from Latin to German, at this time it was revolutionary because no one had ever done this before. This act meant that more people could come to church and know how to read the Bible, so it eliminated the stress of not being able to follow along with prayers.
  • After all of these events a new religion was formed called the Protestant religion, the new uprising meant that people had a choice between the Catholic Church and the Protestant church. So there was much more freedom and everyone was more equal because the Pope was no longer in charge.
