The battle of Marathon was, by far, the most famous battle of the Persian Wars. It was because of the first battle of Greece and Persia.
The Greeks, in their formation, were all lined up person by person with the fastest runners in the front and the slower ones in the back.
On the other side of the battlefield, the persians were all clustered together with the untouchables in the front of their army.
Rejoice! We Conquer!
The fastest runners, all in front of the Greek army, ran as fast as they can and killed the untouchables and ran back to the army being chased by the persians.
During the battle, none of the armies showed any mercy toward the other one and in the end, the Persian forces retreated.
In the aftermath of the battle, the Greeks sent their fastest runner to run the 26 miles to Athens. In the end, he died of exhaustion after yelling out the news that they won.
