  • No Hiram, Gramma's not coming back...She's gone to glory Hiram, gone to glory and left me here alone.
  • She'll be back Grampa...
  • Gramma is dead
  • Ever since I got home from the war, your mother and I have been planning to move west.
  • What's wrong with Mississippi?
  • Gramma, Grampa, Naomi, I'll come back. I promise.
  • Hiram's Gramma passes away during this event, and hiram has some trouble understanding whats going on. After some explanation from his grandfather, he understands that she is dead.
  • You be a good boy in Arizona, and make sure you don't go forgetting your grampa.
  • I won't, Grampa. I promise.
  • Hiram's father, Harlan, Informs Hiram that they will be taking him from Mississippi. Once Harlan finishes graduate school, they will be leaving Greenwood, leaving his grandfather alone. Hiram wants to stay with his Grandfather but his Harlan won't let him. He does get to stay for the rest of the year while his father finishes up school.
  • You think you won something big, don't you. Well you're going to find out that I know some things you don't. Greenwood's not going to be what you expect, Hiram. You're older now , you'll see. And I'm sorry for what you'll see.
  • Hiram goes to the bridge over the Yazoo river hoping to see Naomi to say goodbye. Before he leaves, he promises to return to Greenwood.
  • Hiram leaves for Arizona with his parents and has to say goodbye to his Grandfather. He promises he will never for get him.
  • Hiram's mom convinces his father to allow him to go to Greenwood because his grandfather had a stroke. He hasn't been there for seven years and is happy that he is going back. His dad makes it clear to him that now that he is older something will show. (Racism)
  • R.C., Hiram's old friend from Greenwood, shoves fish guts down Emmet Till's throat, a black boy that Hiram befriended. Hiram just stood there and watched because he didn't know what to do. He offered him some of his lunch leftovers but R.C. did not approve.
