Cloward and Ohlin sought to combine the theories of Merton and Cohen to explain the different kinds of criminal subcultures they identified in contemporary America. They identified these as Criminal Conflict retreatist subcultures.
They identified illegitment opportunity structure's, meaning that through criminal means they could find a structure where they could rise through the ranks. For example if they became a drug dealer they could then rise through the ranks
As the drug dealer contentious to rise through the ranks of there illegitimate opportunity structure they will gain more control with there illegal structure.
