Our story takes place during the Great Depression near Soledad, California, where two migrant workers, Lennie Small and George Milton, are on their way to a nearby ranch

When they reach the bunkhouse at the farm, an old man named Candy shows them their beds. The bosses son, Curly who is a short man then enters bunkhouse. Curly tries to pick a fight with Lennie, since he's a lot taller, out of his jealousy and insecurity
After a day of work, the men return to the bunkhouse. Slim, whose dog had a new litter, gives Lennie one of them. Carlson, another worker, complains about Candy's dog, who is old and stinky He offers to shoot the dog, and after repeated complaints Candy finally gives in.
