  • Whiskey Rebellion
  • We will not pay this tax since we produce it
  • I have set a new tax on whiskey
  • Federal Judiciary Act of 1789
  • We overrule your decision to make this a law in your states.
  • This is not fair, but under the Federal Judiciary Act of 1789 it is constitutional
  • Marbury v. Madison
  • See I don't have to give you a job. No job for you Marbury!
  • Your claim is denied. The law you are trying to sue under is unconstitutional.
  • I am suing because he wont give me my job as justice of peace!
  • When a tax was imposed on whiskey, a group of farmers became mad. They believed that they shouldn't have to pay these taxes since they are the ones who produce it. They didn't want to pay the tax because it was made from corn that would eventually be spoiled. This group of farmers led an uprising and in response, Washington led forces to put down the rebellion. This rebellion proved that the nation was strong and that if needed, our government would be ready to put down a rebellion.
  • Alien Act
  • You now have to wait 14 years to become American citizens
  • This is not fair at all!!!
  • In 1789, Congress passed an act that would explain what the court system would be like. There would be 13 district federal courts, 3 circuit courts of appeal, and the Supreme Court would be made of 6 justices. This act also gave the states their own courts; however, federal courts had the power to overturn the states decision. This act made John Jay . the first Supreme Court Chief of Justice.
  • Sedition Act
  • Government is horrible. They are trying to fool you all into submission
  • We caught you writing about the government! You're under arrest
  • In 1801, William Marbury sued James Madison because he did not received his commission at the end of his administration. During this legal case, the US Supreme Court deemed an act of Congress unconstitutional. This enacted the doctrine of judicial review. This was the review by the US Supreme Court decision on whether a law by the government was constitutional or not.
  • Louisiana Purchase
  • I need money for my army, so I am willing to offer you the entire Louisiana land for $15 million dollars. This will give you complete control of the New Orleans port.
  •  President John Adams passed acts in 1798 that made it harder for immigrants to vote and gave certain US officials the power to deport foreigners. These laws raised the waiting period for immigrants to become citizens, made it possible for officials to put any subject of an enemy nation in prison, and gave the chief executive the power to ban any alien that they considered dangerous to the nation.
  • But-but we only 2 years left to become citizens.
  • The Sedition Act was passed by US Congress and signed into law by President John Adams. This act prohibited the false or the hateful writings against the government. This also banned any writings about feelings of opposition towards any acts. This oppressed any speech or expression of negative opinions against the government or the President.
  • Western settlers depended on the Mississippi River for goods and other marketing items. However, the land was already owned by France. France needed money to fund their army.  So, the United States and France made a deal that the US could have the entire Louisiana area (827,000) for $15 million. This deal doubled the size of the United States and gave the US complete control of the port of New Orleans and increased the westward expansion idea.
  • This will double the size of my land, so I accept your offer.
