Abigail Williams, Reverend Parris's niece, was leading a group of young girl, including Betty Parris, Parris's daughter, Ruth Putnam, Putnam's daughter and Mary Warren, and the black servant Tituba dancing in the forest. Parris discovered the secret party and Betty fainted.
Betty lied ill and the local doctor said it was caused by "unnatural causes". Abigail insisted they were only dancing when the Putnams came in and told Parris Ruth was sick, too. They believed in witchcraft, and Mrs. Putnam admited she sent Ruth to Tituba, who knew how to speak with the dead, to find out who murdered her seven children, each of whom died at birth.
Mary and Mercy, the servant of the Putnams and the Proctors, suggested Abigail to tell the truth, but Abigail threatened them and the awaken Betty to keep what they were doing in the woods in secret.
Tituba realized the only way to save herself is to admit the charge, so she claimed the Devil came to her with several women.
Abigail and Betty joined the accusations and named more people they claimed to have seen with the Devil.
John Proctor, who was Abigail's former employer and had an affair with her, met with Abigail alone. He firmly denied his feelings to Abigail and agitated her.
