Storyboard Text

  • Before the Dawes Act, Indians lived (relatively) freely on their land, and they lived in harmony together and with other tribes.
  • However, the president thought otherwise.
  • Split up the land! Assimilate Natives into our culture!
  • He wanted to split up the land and sell it to individual landowners instead of the whole tribe. This is one way the Natives were assimilated into the settlers' culture.
  • Instead of the lands being fertile for farming...
  • They were not fertile and unsuitable for farming.
  • Which negatively impacted the Indians and left them helpless, robbed of their crops and their way of life.
