  • The Lottery Begins
  • Everyone Gathers
  • Mr. Summers
  • On June 27th, it was finally time for the lottery to begin. Every year, after school had been left out for the summer, all of the towns people, including children, men and women gather for the ritual.
  • Choosing the Hutchinson's
  • They were all standing with their families, waiting for Mr. Summers to begin speaking.
  • Tessie's Selected
  • Mr. Summers was the man who was in charge of the lottery each year, he always brings his black wooden box with him, which is holding all of the tiny slips of paper.
  • Tessie Is Killed
  • The lottery started when Mr. Summers called up the head of each family individually. After calling everybody's name, he told the men to each unfold their slip of paper, and to see who's had the black dot on it. This year, Bill Hutchinson was the man with this piece of paper.
  • After Bill was chosen, each family member, even the very small children were each given a piece of paper. This made their mother/wife, Tessie, very upset, that it was going to be her or someone from her family. Once they were told to unfold the papers, Tessie found that she had the dotted one.
  • After everybody had found out Tessie had this slip of paper, they all knew that she was going to die. So, she is put into a cleared out space with no other people. People began to hit her with stones, later killing her.
