  • "You knew didn't you? I'm part of you? Close, Close, Close! I'm the reason why it's no go, why things are what they are."(Golding 143) The monster or beast is a part of each and every kid.  Each kid displays some sort of savagery. The beast represents savagery.
  • "There was a ship out there. Yu said you would keep the fire going but you let it out... They might have seen us. We might have gone home."(Gloding 70) The fire is civilized. With the fire going they are able to use it as a beacon.
  • "Simon, sitting between the twins and Piggy wiped his glasses and shoved his piece of meat over to Piggy," (Golding, 63).  While no one would look out for Piggy or give him food, Simon saw that he wanted meat and was kind enough to share with him. This shows that he is civilized because he makes sure that everyone is fed.
