Hello my name is Horace Mann. I am known as "the father of public schools".
What if we make Horace the supervisor of education for Massachusetts.
We need to get more schools avaliable for children so they have a better education and they can stay off of trouble in the streets.
But how will we afford it. Teachers are already rarely paid and taxes need to go towards other things.
We just don't have the money.
As you can see many children are getting in trouble on the streets. And no taxes dollars were are towards public schools.
It is the 1800s and the reform during this time is making school more available for children. Horace man believed that it is important that children get education. It would keep them off the streets and out of trouble. Some of us are even fighting for education for girls and African Americans.
We need to include the less fortunate kids, girls, and African Americans in these schools.
In the early 1820s Horace Mann became the supervisor for the state of Massachusetts. He spoke in towns and villages about the importance of education. He wanted more children to get out of trouble and get an education. He knew education would give children the chance to become something like and artist or poet.
There were many problems with education in the 1800s. Only rich privileged children could afford going to school. Others were often found getting in trouble on the streets. Taxes weren't going to education. Horace Mann wanted everyone to have a shot at education. Girls and African Americans were also not allowed to go to school.
Horace Mann worked hard to get the money from states to be able to provide public schools for kids, so they could get a good education. He also worked hard to get African Americans and women to be able to attend these schools.
In these times including women and African Americans led to more jobs. there were more people who could move on with their education and provide something back to society. Women who had an education could finally be doctors.
These days education is better because everyone has the chance to got to a public schools. It doesn't matter if you are African American, a women or a man. We are all treated the same and everyone has equal opportunity.
