Puiwa is busy gathering oopu and she hears her child Puniaiki crying.
Aiai, Puniaiki's father, is a fishing god and upon hearing his child crying prays for help with is fishing stations.
After Aiai prays, a storm comes and carries the fish and Puniaiki downstream
Puiwa is grieveing the loss of her son Puniaki and sees an usual, large fish in the water. She decides to keep the fish for a pet.
One day, Puiwa is amazed to find a man child in place of the fish. She is determined to raise the child to be her husband.
However, Puniwa does not know that the child is Puniaiki and that he is a trickster. Puniaiki fooled everyone so he could have his own fishing station. Family cannot always be trusted.
