This is the opening scene when the narrator finds out his brother has been arrested for selling Heroin. Once back in his algebra class he realizes that his students could end up like his brother.
On the narrator's way home from work he runs into one of Sonny's old friends. Sonny's friend tells our narrator about Sonny's drug habbit.
After the narrators daughter grace dies he begins writing to Sonny in prison. Sonny responds to the letters and tries to explain how he ended up in prison. When Sonny is released from prison the narrator, his brother, is there to pick him up.
In a flash back the narrator remembers that Sonny and their Dad used to fight a lot, because they were very similar. He also remember promising his mother to take care of her brother, and the story about their father and his brother. However our narrator doesn't think about his brother until his mother's funeral.
Take care of your brother
After the funeral the brothers begin living together. Sonny tries to explain to the narrator that he wants to be a musician but the narrator does not support Sonny. After the brothers get in a fight about Sonny skipping school and spending all his time at the music hall, Sonny decides to leave and join the Marines.
After Sonny has been out of prison for a few weeks he takes the narrator to a night club where he is well known. Sonny preforms for his brother, although Sonny struggles at first, by the end he is singing with everything he's got. The narrator comes to the realization of just how important music is to his brother. He decides that he is going to support his brother's dream.
