  • "Anybody like to play a little euchre?"
  • George started to play cards with a young rancher called Whit, who had come earlier
  • Carlson tied a rope to the dogs' neck and take him out. Candy lay on his bunk and stared at the ceiling.
  • After a while... A shot sounded in the distance.
  • "I'll play out a few with you,"
  • "Well, he ain't doin' no harm. I give him one of them pups."
  • Then George and Whit talked each other about Curley's wife and how she behaves with the other men on the ranch
  • A man appeared at the door. It was Crooks, a lean colored man with patient eyes and lines on his face.
  • "That big new guy's messin' around your pups out in the barn."
  • Carlson took his pistol from his pocket and started cleaning it.
  • Then Curley realized that Slim isn't there but in the barn and he hurried up towards it. Whit and Carlson followed him, excited for a fight.
  • Suddenly Lennie and Carlson came together. Curley came later too, again looking for his wife.
  • "Any you guys seen my wife?"
  • Another visitor came, he was Carlson. They introduced each other. Then Carlson asked Slim about his dog. While Lennie got excited by that.
  • She had her puppies last night...
  • "Slim- how's your dog? I didn't see her under your wagon this morning."
  • Slim came to the bunk house again. He was a kind tall man with an ageless face. He started talking to the two men.
  • A triangle began to ring outside and the men went to have dinner. Lennie and George talked about asking Slim if he could give Lennie a puppy
  • 'Bout half an hour ago maybe.
  • Curley came by again, now looking for his wife.
  • "You seen a girl around here?"
  • "Listen to me, you crazy bastard, Don't you even take a look at that bitch... You leave her be."
  • Slim came in and told the woman he had seen Curley at her house.
  • "Gosh, she was purty."
  • George advised Lennie to keep away from her.
