Tell the students will pretend they are visitors from outer space, coming from a planet named "Deevoid" viewing life on Earth for the first time.
Find an area on your school grounds where you can set up study plots 2'x2'. Try to find an area where study plots differ from each other. Check for hazards!
Measure and mark one study plot for each team of four students using ribbon or string. Make copies of student pages. They should record and describe all the life forms they find within their plot.
Once the students are back inside, they should hold a conference to discuss the Earth Expedition. Give each team time to prepare its presentation.
While presentations are being given, ask students to take notes on all the presentations and then compare and contrast other teams data with their own.
After considering all the data and making comparisons, teams should try to draw conclusions about what factors influence the abundance or lack of biodiversity. Have the students brainstorm ways that biodiversity on Earth benefits the lives of its people.
