After they have received many gifts from the knothole, in chapter 7, they see that the knothole was cemented shut. Scout was sad that she can no longer receive presents. However, Jem was very upset that he burst into tears! Since Jem in much older than Scout he has already developed possibilities about the mysterious "Boo" Radley.
In Chapter 8 during the fire of Miss Maudie's house someone places a blanket over Scout. Atticus and Jem do some thinking and they come to the assumption that Boo Radley placed it their. When Scout hears this she gets disgusted and starts gagging at the verge of throwing up. On the other hand, Jem no longer sees Boo as a threat.
In Chapter 9 Scout goes to her aunts house for the summer. Francis, (her cousin), tells Scout that Dill is a runt and then calls Atticus a "nigger-lover". Scout gets furious beats him up after she curses at him.
In chapter 10, both Jem and Scout were both astonished by their father Atticus who shot a rabid dog at an incredible distance perfectly. Since Atticus is a very well mannered lawyer and he prefers to read rather than hunting, smoking, and fishing they judge him for his appearance and did not expect him to do such a task.
In Chapter 11 Jem gets punished for destroying Mrs. Dubose's camellia bush. His punishment was to read to Mrs. Dubose everyday and Scout joins him. A month after his punishment was over Mrs. Dubose dies because she was a morphine addict. She left behind a camellia flower as a present for Jem.
