The narrator is explaining why he is in the asylum. He says he is not insane, however he killed a man not because he didn't like the man, his eye vexed him. (Exposition)
Make the heartbeat stop! I have commited the horrible deed.
The narrator looks at the old man for 7 nights, chuckling at the idea that he might kill the man. (Rising Action)

The police officers reportedly came after a neighbor called saying that they heard a scream. The narrator was cool, until he started to "hear" the heartbeat of the old man, so he shows the officers the body. (Falling Action)
The police officers took him into the mental asylum because they realized that he is insane. (Resolution)
