Scout longs to go to school. She sees the kids at school having fun and dreams about how it could be.
Scouts teacher, Miss Caroline, gets mad at Scout for knowing how to read. She tells Scout to remind her father, Atticus, to not teach her at home anymore.
Jem asks Scout how her first day is going and she explains what has happened to her so far. Jem tries to comfort her and tells her that Miss Caroline has a new way of teaching the first grade.
Miss Caroline caught Scout writing a letter and again tells her to tell her father to stop teaching her. She also tells her that they wont learn to write until the 3rd grade.
Miss Caroline tells the class to raise their hand if they go home for lunch and tells the kids who brought their lunch to put it on their desk.
Miss Caroline sees that Walter Cunningham didn't have a lunch on his desks. She asks him if he forgot it and he says yes. Miss Caroline offers him a quarter to pay for his lunch but he rejects it because he cannot pay her back.
