After training for several days he has improved holding his breath under water. The only problem that he is having is that he gets a bloody nose when he is underwater for a long period of time. Instead of waiting until the next year he decided he would go through the tunnel before he returns home.
Setting: The story takes place on a beach somewhere where it is warm.
The day before he leaves he goes into the tunnel. He had many struggles with holding his breath and in the story it says that he felt like he was going to pass out. With the pain he was having he decided to push through and swim out of the tunnel. When he gets out of the water he has a really bad bloody nose and through the pain he was proud of himself for going through the tunnel.
Conflict:The conflict of the story is that Jerry sees the local boys swimming through a tunnel and he wants to go through the tunnel also, but Jerry cannot hold his breath long enough and he cannot find the tunnel they are using to swim to the other side.
He begs his mom for goggles so his mom gets him goggles and now he is able to see better under the water. Jerry finds the tunnel but he is not able to hold his breath long enough. This is when he starts to train himself by holding his breath for long periods of time so he can go through the tunnel without dying or passing out.
At the end of the day Jerry was very proud that he went through the tunnel even with all the injuries he had.
