  • Northern Free States: Beliefs about Congressional Power ?
  • Northern Free States: Fears about the Compromise ?
  • They didn’t want to see slavery in the North, a lot of northerners viewed the compromise as a victory for southerners because they were getting more land in the North as long as having slavery.
  • Southern Slave States: Why did they Support it ?
  • Northern free states who believed the federal government should be stronger than the central government has the federal authority in congress
  • Southern Slave States: Beliefs about States' Rights?
  • It would throw off the balance in congress, and the northerners would lose power in congress, they were afraid it could create a dangerous precedent for future exceptions, it might allow more expansion for slavery in the north, it would empower the southern slave states to bully the northern states and turn more states into slave states.
  • Southern Slave States: Fears about the Compromise
  • They supported the compromise because they get to expand slavery in the North, it also keeps the balance, and is a victory for states rights, southerners were also thinking about the future, and how they could over power the northerners in congress
  • The southern slave states only wanted the state governments to vote on whether or not a state would be a pro or anti slavery state. They wanted this because it would give them more power.
  • They were afraid congress would change the law and hurt the southern states because congress created the law in the first place, this gives them the right to change them whenever they want.
