A sacrifice was a sacred occasion, so worshippers would wash thoroughly and wear clean, or even new, clothing. They also adorned themselves, most commonly with garlands.
The animal had to appear willing to be sacrificed. In order to show it off, it was adorned with ribbons, and if it had horns these were gilded (covered in a thin layer of gold).
Suddenly producing the knife from the basket, the sacrificer swiftly cut a few hairs from the victim's forehead and threw them onto the altar fire – a “taster” for the god.
