Scout is about to get into a fight with Walter Cunningham for getting her in trouble because he didn't have any lunch.
Yo' folks might be better than the Cunninghams but it don't count for NOTHIN' the way your disgracing 'em - if you can't act fit to eat at the table YOU CAN JUST SET HERE AND EAT IN THE KITCHEN!
Before they can fight Jem interrupts them and invites Walter to dinner at their house.
Walter piled food on his plate. He and Atticus talked together like two men. Walter poured syrup on his vegetables and meat with a generous hand, Scout was confused/annoyed and said out-loud "he's gone and drowned his dinner in syrup"
Have you ever considered that Jem doesn't worry her half as much?
After Scout said this, Calpurnia requested her presence in the kitchen. Calpurina told her off for disgracing him and sent her back to the dining room with a smack.
Scout returned to the dining room and finished her diner without another word.
Scout concluded that Calpurnia liked Jem more than her and Atticus informed Scout that he would not be getting rid of Calpurnia now or ever.
