Guy Montag is a fireman that burns books. These firemen start fires nowadays instead of preventing them. He hasn't been to keen with questioning what he does; he is just doing his job, after all.
On his way back home from work one day, Montag runs into a girl named Clarisse. He thinks she is an odd one, with talking and thinking too much instead of just watching TV. After talking to her, Montag has his first question about his job. He wonders why the books are banned, and if there is a chance he would ever get to read them.
After wondering about these books to be burned and talking with his wife, Montag decides to ask fire chief, Captain Beatty, if he could take some books for a study. He was allowed, and he started reading them with his wife. He wondered the meaning of these words in the books, and wanted to study them.
When the firemen start another book burning, Montag discovers they arrived at his house. He was forced by Captain Beatty to burn down his own house with a flamethrower. He had burned everything to the ground. He had also flamed Beatty to death. The Hound designed to kill was on its way, and Beatty burnt it down too. With everything going on, his only instinct was to escape and run. He was now a wanted man on the run from the police.
With Montag running from the police, everything was a mess. He's on the run from another Mechanical Hound. Eventually, the Hound lost track of Montag. Montag had found a river and a home that contains a group of book readers.
After being introduced to the group, Montag was announced a member of the group. The war had started and the bombs have destroyed the town, and it would never be the same again.
