  • It effects both men and women equally. The symptoms: A heart attack occurs when the blood flow to a part of the heart is blocked by a blood clot. If this clot cuts off the blood flow completely, the part of the heart muscle supplied by that artery begins to die. Most people survive their first heart attack and return to their normal lives to enjoy many more years of productive activity.
  • Hi. My disease is Cardiovascular Disease. It leads to heart attacks. 610,000 people die of heart disease in the United States every year–that's 1 in every 4 deaths. More than half of the deaths due to heart disease in 2015 were in men.
  • This disease can have drastic consequences on the person and their family. When someone in a family has a heart attack, it is scary. Having a heart attack means you have to make some changes. The doctor will advise you of medications and lifestyle changes according to how badly the heart was damaged and what degree of heart disease caused the heart attack. You may be out of work for awhile or have to give up certain hobbies or activities.
  • You cannot control some risk factors, such as things like being a man, older age, and having a family history of heart disease.
  • Also, being a post-menopausal woman is a risk. Research shows that African Americans, American Indians, and Mexican Americans are more likely to have heart disease than Caucasians.
  • You can protect yourself by doing several things. First, eating a healthy diet, low in cholesterol. You should also avoid smoking. Keeping your blood pressure low helps, too. You should watch your stress. Be calm and happy. Enjoy spending time with family, friends and your pets.
  • Keeping physically active will have a positive impact. For instance, developing a good cardiovascular workout routine is good. Doing things like running, bicycling or aerobic training is great. Even if you just take a daily walk, that will help. Talk to your doctor and a physical trainer to develop a good program for you.
  • So, have a heart!! Take care of the ones you love and yourself by making heart healthy choices!
