  • Darwin was the first to work up a detail case of how natural processes could transform one species into another.
  • James Hutton: His ideas that indirectly influenced Darwin as he came up with the mechanism of natural selection.
  • Jean-Baptiste Lamrack: botanist and zoologist who inspired Darwin's ideas of natural selection.
  • Charles Lyell: His theory of Unitarianism was a great influence on Darwin.
  • Thomas Malthus: Understood populations and their growth or decline and Darwin was fascinated by it.
  •  Acquired Characteristics: modification or change in an organ or tissue during the life time of an organism due to use, disuse, or environmental effects, and not inherited.
  • Artificial selection: the breeding of plants and animals to produce desirable traits.
