My name is Dr. Hector P. Garcia. I used my life and status as a soldier to stand up for the rights of Mexican-Americans.
My people needed their rights, and I helped give that to them.
I had no idea why my people were being treated the way that they were. They had no proper education, no health care, and they were shunned because of their ethnicity and race. They didn't deserve any of it!
But my main concern was for the Mexican-American veterans who had no health care or education. So, I came up with the idea of an organization called the GI Forum, designed to help Mexican-American veterans in need.
Once the GI Forum was founded in 1948, my fellow Mexican-American veterans received a proper education and health care. They were finally able to get the treatment and respect they deserved.
