Storyboard Text

  • One day when Dorothea Dix went to a jail to teach Sunday school.
  • She noticed many injustices done to the prisoners.
  • People were chained up and put in cages.
  • The mentally ill were whipped if they misbehaved.
  • Kids who committed small crimes were jailed with adult criminals.
  • I just stole a piece of candy.
  • I killed twenty people.
  • 1000s of people in debtor's prison owed less than $20.
  • I am only $2 in debt.
  • For two years Dix collected information on the injustices she saw.
  • She campaigned for prison reform for the rest of her life.
  • By the time she died in 1887, many of the injustices were no more.
