  • Symbol
  • Symbol
  • Imagery
  • The Scarlet Ibis is a symbol for Doodle. In the story it says,"Its legs were crossed and its claw like feet were delicate." Doodle couldn't walk either.
  • Theme
  • The bleeding tree is a symbol to Doodle. It represents dying and Doodle knows that is he going to die.
  • Dynamic Character
  • Imagery is a visually descriptive or figurative language. This imagery shows when the two boys go out on the lake in the paddle boat. In the story it says," After we drifted a long way, I put oars in place and made Doodle row back against the tide. Black clouds began to gather in the southwest, and he kept watching them, trying to pull oars a little faster." Page number 360
  • Personal Reaction
  • The theme is never give up on someone. I think this because Doodles brother thought that he was a disappointment, but then later on realizes what Doodle can really do. In the story it states,"He was born when I was six and was, from the outset, a disappointment." It also says,"It seemed so hopeless from the beginning that it's a miracle I didn't give up." Finally the story says,"Once I succeeded in teaching Doodle to walk, I began to believe in my infallibility."
  • The dynamic character is the narrator. I think this because in the beginning of the story he thought that Doodle was a disappointment and towards the end he believe in Doodle because he got Doodle to walk.
  • At the end of the story I felt upset because Doodle dies and that is when him and his brother are starting to get closer. I think that the narrator was a bad brother in the beginning and becomes a good brother at the end. In the story it said,"When Doodle was five years old, I was embarrassed at having a brother of that age who couldn't walk." It also said,"Once I succeeded in teaching Doodle to walk, I began to believe in my infallibility."
