Storyboard Text

  • After the Congress of Vienna, the German Confederation, a collection of thirty nine states with the same language and culture, was established.
  • What is a nation? A nation is a group of people with a shared culture, history, language, land, and sometimes religion.
  • The Story of German Unification
  • One of the leading advocates for German Nationalism was Otto von Bismark, prime minister of Prussia.
  • What we need is iron and blood!
  • Bismarck believed in realpolitik, so when liberals in Parliament did not approve of collecting taxes to fund war, he did so anyway.
  • Yes sir! For Germany!
  • Prussia joined forces with Austria in an 1864 border dispute with Denmark to gain Schleswig for itself, while Austria got Holstein.
  • Schleswig belongs to Prussia!
  • Prussia then decided to invade Holstein. He gained the support of Italy and the promise of neutrality from France. The Austro-Prussian War ended in just seven weeks with the annexation of Holstein and the North German states.
  • I surrender!
  • We are close to victory my comrades!
  • In 1870, Prussia sought to gain Alsace and Lorraine, which were once part of the Holy Roman Empire. Thus, it started the Franco-Prussian War. In 1871, with the help of the Southern German states, they won the war.
  • We did it!
  • Finally, the German states were united! Kaiser Wilhem I appointed Bismarck as the first chancellor of this new German nation.
  • Thank you Kaiser.
