Storyboard Text

  • Please help us, your Highness!
  • I strongly suggest you think about doing this, your Highness.
  • Since the 15th century, Spain had control over the Netherlands. From 1567, the Spanish launched a brutal campaign to stamp out Protestantism in the Netherlands.
  • In the parcel that came along with this letter is a bunch a money and a few weapons to help you out. Remember, you didn't get this from me. Elizabeth I Of England
  • In 1572, Protestants in the Netherlands rebelled against Spanish rule. They asked Elizabeth for help when Phillip sent a large Spanish army against them.
  • Elizabeth's close advisor, Robert Dudley (Earl of Leicester) tried to persuade Elizabeth to send help to the Dutch Protestants to prevent Spain from becoming even more powerful.
  • Fine; we'll send an army over.
  • You'd made the right choice, Your Highness.
  • Elizabeth secretly sent money and weapons to the rebels and allowed their ships to shelter in English ports.
  • The Spanish, led by the Duke of Parma, arrived in the Netherlands and Elizabeth's government was worried about such a large army just across the English Channel.
  • In 1584, the leader of the Dutch rebels, William of Orange, was assassinated. This is when Elizabeth agreed to direct involvement in the Netherlands as without her help, the rebels will be defeated, leaving Spain in a position to threaten England.
