Storyboard Text

  • NEGROES SIGN UP! CENTRAL HIGH SCHOOL THE FIRST TO DESEGREGATE
  • THE LITTLE ROCK NINE
  • I'll send in my troops to "restore order and peace".
  • Little Rock, Arkansas, had already desegregated its parks, library, university and buses. The plan was to then desegregate the school gradually. About 75 black students applied to the Central High School which was going to be the first of the schools to desegregate.
  • LYNCH HER! LYNCH HER!
  • TWO FOUR SIX EIGHT WE DON'T WANNA INTEGRATE
  • 25 students were chosen, but many opponents threatened the families of black students with loss of jobs and violence if they were to join. This meant that, at the start of the school year, in 1957, only nine students were willing to go. They became known as the "Little Rock Nine".
  • "LITTLE ROCK NINE" BECOME FAMOUS THE PUBLIC HORRIFIED BY THEIR TREATMENT
  • The Governor of Arkansas, Orval Faubus, was again the desegregation. He sent 250 state troops to "keep the peace", but it was really to stop the black students from going in.
  • TWO! FOUR! SIX! EIGHT! WE DON'T WANNA INTEGRATE!
  • The students were told to skip the first day of school, as Daisy Bates, the local NAACP organiser, arranged for them to arrive the next day. However, Elizabeth Eckford missed the message and arrived alone to a mob of white people. The chanted, "Lynch her! Lynch her!" while the state troopers turned their backs.
  • Photos of Elizabeth and the mob were in newspapers worldwide as there were more than over 250 reporters in Little Rock. The Little Rock Nine became famous overnight, and people both inside and outside of the US were outraged at their treatment.
  • President Eisenhower was worried about the bad image that America was getting, and so was forced to intervene. He ordered Faubus to remove the state troops from Little Rock. On September 23, Faubus did remove them, but riots still occurred outside the school.
