Storyboard Text

  • PRESIDENTIAL ORDER ________________________________ ________________________________ ________________________________ ________________________________ ________________________________ ________________________________ ________________________________ ________________________________ _____________________________                         Signed: Eisenhower
  • Let me explain . . .
  • LITTLE ROCK SCHOOLS CLOSED UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE (although it's really to stop integration from happening)
  • On the evening of September 24, Eisenhower signed a presidential order sending over a thousand federal troops to Little Rock, with Faubus' troops being placed under state control.
  • Eisenhower's actions gained controversy as he didn't have to ask for approval from Congress. To explain himself, Eisenhower went onto television.
  • The federal troops stayed until the end of term, making sure the Little Rock Nine got to and from school and moved between classes safely. They stayed until the school year ended in May 1958; however, every Little Rock school was closed for the next year in order to combat integration.
