  • Assassination of Archduke Ferdinand
  • March Across Belgium
  • First Battle of the Marne
  • Archduke Ferdinand is assassinated by the Black Hands, a Serbian nationalist group. This cause Austria to  declare an ultimatum which Serbia could not fulfill, thus leading to war. June 28, 1914
  • Tannenberg
  • In an effort to quickly defeat France, Germany barges through neutral Belgium which causes the British to enter the war. 1914
  • The Lusitania
  • The first battle of the Marne was the event which began the stalemate on the western front. The French halted Germany's push at the Marne river resulting in the race to the sea. 1914
  • Gallipoli
  • At Tannenberg the Russian forces attempted to break into Germany from the east. The Russians were poorly prepared however, so the Germans soundly defeated them resulting in many further German victories over Russia. 1914
  • The Lusitania was an American ship that the British were using to haul munitions. A German U-boat sank the Lusitania which put America on the road to war with Germany. 1915
  • The British attempted to break through the Ottoman empire in order to reach the eastern front. They landed at Gallipoli, but the Turkish soldiers were ready for them and forced the British to retreat. 1915-1916
