On June 17, 1972 many burglars were arrested in Washington, D.C by the Watergate buildings. They were caught stealing copies of top-secret documents and they bugged the phones.
Later they found out Nixon wasn't being truthful. A couple days after the break-in he provided lots of money to the burglars. After that Nixon tried to instruct the CIA to prevent the investigation the the water gate crime.
Nixon testified before a jury about his crimes, and they also testified that Nixon had recorded tapes of every conversation he had. He later ordered to be fired, and these events were known as ¨The Saturday Night Massacre¨.
The Supreme Court ordered President Nixon to turn over the tape recordings, and this later resulted in him resigning since he was found guilty.
President Nixon was voted to get impeached for obstruction of justice, abuse of power, criminal cover-up, and many other offences of the constitution.
His abuse of his power had a effect on Americans which created an atmosphere of no trust. Americans were also very disappointed because it added to another thing that was bad in that decade.
