Gandhi visits corresponds withstreet protests by activists known as ‘‘Suffragettes’’. Those women were fussed inthe streets for the cause.
In November 1906, Gandhi said:‘’Today the whole country is laughing at them and they have only a few peopleon their side. But courageous, these women work on steadfast in their cause. Theyare restrained to succeed and gain the franchise for the simple reason thatactions are better than words.’’
Gandhi hoped that the suffragettes' example would inspire Indians in South African to go to jail in their struggleagainst racial discrimination.
