  • The Louisiana Purchase gave the United States land and resources which boosted the American economy. The Louisiana purchase also gave France needed a large amount of money, and they got it by selling land that they weren’t using at the time.
  • Colonizing the Oregon Territory 1846
  •  When Texas seceded from Mexico, many Mexican citizens to unwillingly become citizens of the Republic of Texas and later, the United States. This caused a lot of tension between the United States and Mexico, as well as greatly increasing the power of the slaveholding states in the United States, which would later become a problem in the American civil war.
  • The signing of the treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo 1848
  • After the Trail of Tears, the land that the Cherokee people were given was in no way equal to the land they had been forced out of, which made it incredibly hard for them to survive, and very hard for them to interact with things outside of their reservations. For the Americans however, the removal of the Cherokee opened up a large amount of land, along with its natural resources that continued to expand the American economy.
  • Expansion into Native American land 1803-1900
  •  When the United States gained the Oregon territory, many valuable resources were discovered on the land, such as gold, which drew American citizens to the area in search of wealth. When they came to the area looking for resources, the citizens encountered many Native Americans, taking their land, killing them, and driving them away.
  • When Mexico ceded a large portion of its land to the United States, the United States gained a claim to that land, which allowed them to justify sending citizens to colonize the newly acquired land and to remove the native inhabitants. At the time, there were already many Mexican citizens who had been forced to become part of the United States.
  • When the United States encountered Native American tribes on the land they had acquired, they decided to lock the Native Americans on reservations, limiting their potential, their resources, and their ability to impact things outside of their reservations. But from the point of view of the United States, this was a very good solution because they got the benefits of all of the land, and kept the Native Americans, who most Americans regarded as primitive out of their way.
