The corpses are a symbol of death and forgotten soldiers. At the beginning, Henry sees the corpses as men who were brave and glorious by fighting. However, he later sees that the corpses are meaningless and they show the real toll of war
A soldier gets wounded from fighting in battle. At first, Henry sees wounds as trophies for fighting bravely and sacrificing yourself for your cause, however he soon learns that wounds are only grim reminders of war.
The flags represent what the soldiers believe in and are fighting for. Henry shows how important the flag is by holding it up when the flag carrier in wounded. Later in the novel, Henry and Wilson capture the Confederate flag symbolizing victory for the Union army.
