The story Night begins in Sighet in the early 1940's. Elie starts the book off by introducing his family members that live in a small town in Romania. Elie and his family are Jews and live in a community of other Jews, therefore Elie grew up very religious. Elie meets Moishe the Beadle and Moishe begins to teach him the Kabbalah. Elie finds the Kabbalah very interesting and begins to pray a lot.
moishe the beadle
Moishe along with all the other foreign Jews are expelled from Sighet. Later Moishe returns and tells everyone that they are not safe and that the concentration camps are awful places. He told everyone he could that he escaped to come warn them of this awful news but no one believed his story. Mosihe kept telling people it was the truth but eventually gave up.
The German troops begin to invade Sighet and begin to take control of the Jews and the way they live. The German soldiers move all of the Jews into two separate ghettos. After that the first thing the Germans do is confiscate any valuables that the Jews own. The Jews were told if they left their house they were going to suffer the death penalty. Elie's family was moved to a smaller ghetto and then finally his family got deported.
As soon as the cattle car arrives in Birenau, Elie and his Father are seperated from the girls in the family. Elie and his Father were told by another person to lie about their age, at the moment they were confused on why. As Elie and his Father approached the line they realized they were killing people that were unfit for labor. After marching the Jews arrive in Auschwitz where they were assigned to work at a factory located in Buna.
While at one of the camps Elie's foot becomes severely infected. Elie tries to suffer through the pain but it gets to the point where he can not walk so he goes to see the doctor. While Elie is in the hospital, troops began to move closer and faster to the camp then expected. The march gets moved to that night. Elie has a choice to either stay back in the hospital or go on the march with his father. Elie decides to march along with his father, but his father isn't as strong as Elie so the march speeds up his death.
The prisoners are all marching to Buchenwald. After arriving in Buchenwald Elie's Father dies from dysentery. Elie has a sense of relief which makes Elie horrified for what he has turned into. After Elies fathers death sinks in Elie feels lifeless, like there is no point in living. Shortly after the death the camp is liberated on April 11th, 1945. When Elie goes into the hospital he looks in the mirror and he sees himself as a corpse.
