For Christmas Rex brings each one of his kids out in the middle of the desert at a time to pick a star for their present. This is important because it shows that he can provide for his family even when he has nothing and that he cares about his children.
Rose Mary Walls
When Jeanette was in high school and Lori was in New York Rose Mary left for 2 months to renew her teaching degree. Rose Mary left Jeanette in charge with $200. Jeanette came cup with a plan to spend a certain amount of money each day. Soon, Rex came up top her and asked her for money for beer and cigarettes. This became a more frequent and he would do it every few days asking for money. Jeanette was running of money fast so she got a job at the jewelry store to help. With this in mind, this shows leadership because she tries to take care of her family.
Lori had spent a lot of her life in welch with her crazy family. She had finally realized she had enough and decided to move out, she baby sat a family all summer and made $200 and they bought her a bus ticket to the city. She used that money to get a nice apartment and then quickly got a job at a local restaurant and started saving up her money and was quickly more successful.
When the family is living in Welch, West Virginia Rex doesn't have a steady job so Rose Mary is hired as a teacher at Welch Elementary school. With this in mind, this lets the family have a steady income. Contrasting, she doesn't like going to work so the kids have to encourage her to go to work. The kids also help her with grading papers and going over her work. This shows that Rose Mary only does what she wants to do and doesn't have her kids best interests always in mind.
When maureen is living out in New York she starts to get into small arguments with her mother. One day she couldn't take it anymore and stabed her mother. Once she was out of court and jail she moved out to California to hope to get her life together and not have to see anyone in there family for awhile.
