  • The Thirteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution, ratified in December of 1865
  • Jim Crow Laws and "Black Codes" were put in place to restrict and limit the freedom of African Americans. Some laws stated that employment was required for freed slaves.
  • If anyone did not have a job, they would be put in jail to be used in a chain gang. African American children, men, and women would be forced to do hard labor all day, with no compensation. It was slavery with a different name
  • It is a secret hate group in the southern U.S., active for several years after the Civil War, which aimed to suppress the rights of black people. The groupcommitted cruel and awful crimes against African Americans
  • The KKK (Ku Klux Klan)
  • Although the Civil War has made a HUGE positive impact on the rights and freedoms of African Americans in the United States, it didn't solve the problem. It took a while for the government to allow equality for all races. The US took advantages of the loop holes of the amendment, and backlash of the south caused a lot of issues. The war helped get on the right track, but lost the peace in the United States.
