Storyboard Text

  • Stephen Douglas introduced a bill to create a government for Nebraska territories, but his proposal was denied.
  • This act immediately created political divides in the north and south. With Douglas's support, someone from the northern Whig Party decided to join the Republican party and then the Southerners joined the Democrats.
  • In 1855, pro-slavery supporters set up a government at Shawnee Mission. Free-state settlers reacted by creating an antislavery government.
  • Bloody Kansas was the violence after attempts to settle in Kansas-Nebraska territory by the pro-slaves and the free-soilers.
  • Each group wanted to influence the law of the land as to whether each state would enter the Union as a slave or not.
  • The Pottawatomie Massacre was an extremely violent disaster that happened during the attempted settlement of the territory.
  • John Brown then murdered five pro-slavers as revenge for the attack on the town of Lawrence, Kansas; a free-soiler town.
