  • “I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but the content of their character.” (King)
  • Logos
  • " We can never be satisfied as long as our children are stripped of their selfhood and robbed of their dignity by signs stating " For Whites Only"." (King)
  • Abraham Lincoln was someone that was a good role model and people looked up to him because he helped fight slavery. When Martin Luther King Jr. used Abraham Lincoln in his speech it helped draw attention to the audience. It made the readers feel like they were fighting for the same reason.
  • Ethos
  • "When the architects of our republic wrote the magnificent words of the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence, they were signing a promissory note to which every American was to fall heir. This note was a promise that all men, yes black men as well as white men, would be guaranteed the 'unalienable Rights' of 'Life Liberty and the pursuit of happiness.' It is obvious today that America has defaulted on this promissory note, insofar as her citizens of the color are concerned." (King)
  • Pathos is used in this quote by making the audience connect with what he is saying about how his children are judged by the color of their skin. He was making it reflect back on them to think about if their children were treated like that. He was using personal information to grab the audiences attention.
  • Pathos
  • "And there will be neither rest nor tranquility in America until the Negro is granted his citizenship rights. The whirlwinds of revolt will continue to shake the foundation of our nation until the bright day of justice emerges." (King)
  • When King states this in his speech this is logos because it makes people think of this happening to their own children. For some people, it is happening to their children. Then they won't stop until they know something has been done about the situation.
  • Logos
  • "It would be fatal for the nation to overlook the urgency of the moment." (King)
  • King talks about the Declaration of Independence and how even the founding fathers of the United States wanted everything to be equal. When he talks about the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution, it grabs the audiences attention. It then makes them feel like they need to enforce the statements on the documents into their daily lives.
  • This is an example of pathos because he uses emphasizes to determine how hard they will work to get there freedom. This also shows how when he says this how people will then work for there guaranteed rights.
  • This is used as logos because if they do not create equality to all people, it would be fatal. It could then start violence , which it did. It created many problems and many arguments. When King said this in this speech, it made people realize that they needed to do something about the situation or it would just keep getting worse.
