2nd Period Bio Project
This is Sunny the Sunflower's story of how she gets the carbon she needs. Every living thing needs carbon, and Sunny is no exception. Many different aspects go into this cycle, known as the carbon cycle.
First Photosynthesis occurs and this process is unique to plants only. This is how Sunny makes her own food from sunlight, carbon dioxide, and water. Sunny takes in carbon dioxide by holes in her leaves known as stomata. Through this process, she will produce glucose and oxygen as products. The oxygen Sunny produces is used by animals in the next step.
Animals like Bella the Bunny and Delilah the Deer need the oxygen that Sunny produces to undergo cellular respiration. This is how all organism turn food and oxygen into ATP (energy). This process produces ATP, water, and carbon dioxide. The animals breathe this carbon back into the air. This is one of the ways carbon is released back into the atmosphere.
Another way carbon is released into the atmosphere is through fossil fuels. These fuels are formed from the remains of living things. Since all living things are made of carbon, when you burn fossil fuels, carbon is emitted.
Decomposers are also responsible for releasing carbon into the atmosphere. Their job is to break down organic materials, which are made of carbon. Therefore, decomposers such as molly the mushroom, help in the carbon cycle by releasing carbon.
Since all of her friends help out in the Carbon Cycle, Sunny has enough Carbon Dioxide to take in for photosynthesis. Thus, the cycle begins again.
