Ruby pier was very important to the majority of the main characters, in the book "The Five people you meet in heaven". The meaning of Ruby pier to Eddie shifts throughout the book. the first character that has a view on Ruby Pier is The Blue Man, Joseph. He views Ruby pier as the best thing that happened to him. In the first phase of his life he worked in a sweatshop, then after he became blue he worked for the carnival at Ruby Pier. He viewed it as a paradise, because it wasn't a stressful job, and it gave him opportunity. The person that Ruby pier affected the most is Eddie. During his life and after he died for a time, he viewed the pier as a prison. He felt as it had trapped him, and ruined his life.
The diner in the story "The Five People you Meet in Heaven" was an important symbol in the story overall. What the diner was made by Eddie's third person Ruby, who Ruby Pier was named after. Ruby made the diner, because she wanted to help people affected by Ruby Pier. Ruby resented Ruby pier. She resented it, because her husband worked to build it, then it burned down in a fire, and then her husband was ruined. She views the pier as a burden, and curse on her life. The Diner represents how Ruby Pier affects people.
Without a doubt, the most powerful symbol in the story "The Five People You Meet in Heaven," is when Eddie performs the rock washing ceremony. This is the most powerful symbol for many reasons. First it represents Eddie washing away his guilt for killing the girl, Tala. Also it symbolizes Eddie Reversing his mistake as well. This ceremony transformed Eddie's mentality from a negative to a positive outlook.
The Interconnectedness of all life is a very important in the story. It is important because it shows itself in all things in the story, it shows it self for the first time when the Blue Man tells of when he dies. Another time this theme shows itself is when Eddie talks with Ruby because, the pier that she was named after had such a big effect on his life. Finally this theme is shown when Eddie speaks with Tala. Tala ans Eddie are connected when Eddie kills her. They are connected, because That fire led to Eddie's injury, which changed his life.
The purpose of life is a very important theme in this story. It is important, because without a purpose in life people feel sad, and unfulfilled. Eddie felt this way , because he thought he had no purpose. He just thought he was a crappy maintenance worker from the Pier he could never leave. When Tala showed him his purpose his mentality about his life entirely. What was this bold purpose you ask. He was meant to protect the children going through Ruby Pier, by maintaining the rides, and keeping them safe. When he heard he had a purpose, he suddenly felt much happier about his life. in conclusion, The Purpose of life theme was very important to the story
