Oedipus has just saved the city from the sphinx who was terrorising the citizens and is the new king of Thebes and wife to Jocasta. He needs to find the killer of Laius. The city needs to find the killer to stop the plague which is killing the city, Oedipus promises he will save them again and find the killer.
Oedipus calls Tiresias - a blind oracle - to tell him who the murderer was, but Tiresias doesn't want to say who it is. Oedipus gets angry and insults him so Tiresias says that Oedipus is the murderer. Oedipus gets very offended and sends Tiresias away from his house.
Oedipus talks to his wife Jocasta and she talks about how King Laius was supposed to be killed by his own son. Oedipus then remembers that the story of Laius' death matches up when he killed someone on his travels here, but he was told that Laius was killed by a group of robbers so it can't have been him.
