  • "Lottery in June, corn be heavy soon..."
  • Symbolism can be the use of symbols to represent something or the symbolic meaning attached to objects. The pile of rocks is a symbol of ominous things to come and is still a part of the original tradition. Line 15-21: "Bobby Martin had already stuffed his pockets full of stones, and the other boys soon followed his example, selecting the smoothest and roundest stones; Bobby and Harry Jones and Dickie Delacroix- the villagers pronounced this name 'Dellacroy'- eventually made a great pile of stones in one corner of the square and guarded it against the raids of the other boys."
  • Tone/ Theme
  • Imagery in literature should create a mental image in your head. You should be able to envision what is happening in the book clearly and concisely.  Line 1-3: "The morning of June 27th was clear and sunny, with the fresh warmth of a full summer-day; the flowers were blossoming profusely and the grass was richly green."
  • A figure of speech is defined as a word or phrase that, when used in a non-literal sense, results in a vivid or imaginative effect. In simpler words, it makes what your reading interesting and separates it from everyone else's work. Line 197-198: (Rhyme) " 'Used to be a saying about 'Lottery in June, corn be heavy soon.' ' "
  • Tone is the general attitude of a piece of writing or situation. Theme is basically the central topic of a piece of writing and can also be described as what you or the character learned in the story. The tone of this short story is crazed people and the violent killing of Tessie. The theme of this story is that the ending is often different than you expected.
