The pile of rocks is a symbol of ominous things to come and is still a part of the original tradition. Theme is basically the central topic of a piece of writing and can also be described as what you or the character learned in the story. The tone of this short story is crazed people and the violent killing of Tessie. The theme of this story is that the ending is often different than you expected.
