The Guitar and my journey to reaching full skillfulness. Growing up as curious, Nigerian child, my parents always wanted me to focus on succeeding in my education. However, being inquisitive, I always wanted to understand the inner workings of things. This introduced me to my interest for music. At age 13, having avid churchgoers as parents, I was able to have access to musical instruments. This then began my journey wtih the guitar
With the instruments available in church, I was able to play with the guitar. My choirmaster who was in charge of the choir helped train me and other learners on how to play the guitar. However, later on in my journey, I was able to acquire a personal tutor.
I also dabbled with other instruments such as the piano, the drums, as well as the trumpet. However, I did not have much interest for other instruments. I had an unmatched passion for the guitar alone. At that time, I did not own a guitar also practicing once every week at church was not sufficient. I really wanted to get a guitar but my parents wouldn't allow me, until the day my aunt surprised me
It my 14th birthday.
There you go Taiwo!
Ooo my gosh Auntie Trudy!! Tell me it's a dream...
My aunt walked in with an acoustic guitar as my birthday present. I felt so much joy. It was by far the best gift of my life
Your guitar looks cute.
Nice guitar Taiwo
I like your Guitar Taiwo
I was so excited about my gift, i had to take my new guitar to school to show it to my friends.
In the real start of my journey to mastering the guitar, the first thing I learnt was how to read sheet music. Then I learnt music theory, despite it being difficult for me to understand these concepts at such young age.
I will often memorize each note for each string and for each fret in ,y room alone. Plus, I also had to know how to associate each note on paper for each note on my guitar. In addition, I had to learn how to keep in tempo to the beat of each song I was learning at the time.
